The G1 test has 40 questions , 20 on road signs and 20 on rules of the road. You must score at least 16/20 on each section (80%) to pass. Both sections must be passed independently , a high score on one cannot compensate for a low score on the other. The test is computerized at DriveTest centres across Ontario. Most centres allow walk-ins but booking ahead avoids long waits.
G1 holders must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of experience sitting in the front passenger seat. Blood alcohol must be 0.00%. G1 holders cannot drive on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways (like the QEW or DVP) unless accompanied by a licensed driving instructor. Driving between midnight and 5 a.m. is not permitted without a licensed instructor.
Minimum 12 months with a G1 before taking the G2 road test. If you complete an approved driver education course, the waiting period reduces to 8 months. The G2 road test covers basic vehicle control, turns, stops, and residential area driving , not highway driving, which is tested at the full G stage.
Shoro AI has the latest Ontario driving manual , updated when MTO revises it, no government website navigation needed. Read the handbook and practice G1 test questions in the same place, free.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
