Shoro.aiTo drive with a Michigan Level 1 Learner's License, you must be supervised by a licensed parent, legal guardian, or designated licensed adult aged 21 or older.
Michigan requires the supervisor of a Level 1 driver to be at least 21 years old, hold a valid Michigan or equivalent driver license, and sit in the front passenger seat on every drive. A licensed adult in the back seat does not satisfy the supervision requirement under MCL 257.310e.
Under MCL 257.310e, the supervisor must be 21 or older, hold a valid unsuspended license, sit in the front passenger seat, and be unimpaired. Non-parent supervisors require a signed parental designation letter.
Under Michigan GDL law (MCL 257.310e), your supervisor is legally responsible for the vehicle.
Parents, grandparents, legal guardians, adult siblings who are 21 or older, and any licensed adult who meets the age requirement qualify as supervisors. A 20-year-old sibling with a full license does not qualify. An 18-year-old parent does not qualify regardless of license status.
Licensed parents, legal guardians, designated adults 21 or older, and certified driving instructors. A licensed sibling who is 20 years old does not qualify: the cutoff is 21, no exceptions.
Only licensed parents, guardians, designated 21-plus adults, or certified instructors can sign off practice time on the official Michigan supervised driving log (SOS-191).
| Supervisor Type | Allowable? | Specific Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Parent or Legal Guardian | Yes | Must have a valid license. They are the primary signers of your Supervised Driving Log (SOS-191). |
| Designated Adult (e.g., Aunt, Uncle, Neighbor) | Yes | Must be 21+, licensed, and designated by your parent in writing. |
| 21-Year-Old Sibling | Yes | A sibling who is 21 or older with a valid license can supervise if designated by a parent. |
| Adult Sibling (Age 18-20) | No | Siblings under 21 cannot legally supervise a Level 1 driver, even if licensed. |
| Out-of-State License Holder | Yes | They can be a qualified supervising driver if they are 21+ and hold a valid license from their home state. |
Hours with anyone else do not count toward your required 50 practice hours.
If an officer finds a Level 1 driver without a qualified supervisor, both the driver and the adult present can be cited. The driver receives a misdemeanor charge and two points. The 90-day violation-free window resets to day zero. Repeat violations can delay Level 2 eligibility by six months or more.
Any conviction, at-fault crash, or license sanction within 90 days of a Level 2 application restarts the 90-day clean-period clock. Supervisor disqualification can void logged practice hours.
Violations or at-fault crashes can extend the required 90-day clean period under the graduated licensing statute.
If a Level 1 driver gets any conviction, at-fault crash, or license sanction within 90 days of applying for Level 2, the examiner cannot approve the upgrade until a new 90-day violation-free period is completed.
Log each practice session with the supervisor's name, license number, date, time, duration, and road conditions on Form SOS-383. A co-signed log protects you if a road test examiner questions any entries. Keep the completed log in a folder with your permit for every road test appointment.
Verify your supervisor's license status before logging hours to avoid entire driving log rejection.
If you lack a supervisor, you can take lessons with a teen-certified driver education provider, and those supervised hours may be counted toward the required 50 logged hours if recorded on the supervised driving log.

"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
