After getting your Indiana learner's permit, upgrading to a license requires completing the 50-hour practice log, meeting GDL requirements, and passing the driving skills test.st to get a probationary license.
You can begin supervised practice once the learner's permit is valid. Indiana requires 50 supervised hours, including at least 10 at night, on the standard licensing path.
Keep this page focused on the sequence from permit to license. For who may supervise, how to complete State Form 54706, and what hours count, use the dedicated Required Practice Hours and supervisor-rules pages.
With the permit, a supervisor must be present every time. Once you advance to the probationary license, curfew kicks in (10 p.m.-5 a.m. for the first 180 days) and passenger limits apply, no non-family passengers unless a qualified adult is present.
Use your practice time to build skills for the test and real-world driving. Review the Indiana Driver's Manual to refresh road rules before your exam.
Learn more about the full waiting period for your road test and plan accordingly.
Schedule the driving skills exam after you meet the current age, learner-permit holding-period, and supervised-practice requirements. Driving skills tests at BMV branches require an appointment.
Bring the required learner-permit and road-test documents and an eligible, insured, registered vehicle. Use the dedicated Road Test Documents and Vehicle Requirements pages for the full checklist.
If you fail the driving skills exam, a retest waiting period applies. See the Road Test & License guide for current retake timing and repeated-failure rules.
The branch completes the licensing transaction and provides the credential information that applies to your case. The permanent card is mailed after the transaction is completed.
Drive only once the BMV has issued a valid driving credential for you. Follow any restrictions shown on the temporary or permanent credential.
If you are under 21 when the license is issued, Indiana treats it as a probationary driver's license and its restrictions begin when that license is issued.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
