The Illinois instruction permit fee is $20, covering your vision screening and up to three knowledge test attempts within one year. Beyond that flat fee, several processing charges, card fees, and correction costs catch applicants off guard at the counter.eral indirect costs can increase the total price. Download the Illinois Driver's Handbook PDF to prepare for the knowledge test.
Illinois permit fees depend on the applicant and the service. A first-time instruction permit is $20 for an applicant under 69. A permit for an applicant age 69 or older is $5. An applicant under 69 who was previously issued an Illinois permit or driver's license pays $10. A Class D permit renewal is $10, and a duplicate or corrected permit is $5.
| Permit Service | Current State Fee |
|---|---|
| Original instruction permit - first-time applicant under 69 | $20 |
| Instruction permit - age 69+ | $5 |
| Instruction permit - under 69 with a prior Illinois permit/license | $10 |
| Class D permit renewal | $10 |
| Duplicate or corrected permit | $5 |
The application fee covers up to three examination attempts within one year. There is no separate state charge for each of the first three attempts.
If you receive your driver's license before the instruction permit expires, Illinois SOS says an additional fee may not be required. The amount actually due depends on your permit status and the license transaction.
A Class D instruction permit renewal is $10 under the current Illinois SOS fee schedule.
The standard first-time permit fee is $20 for an applicant under 69. An applicant under 69 who was previously issued an Illinois permit or driver's license pays $10, while an instruction permit for an applicant age 69 or older is $5.
Keep the state fee separate from optional or private costs. Driver education, extra driving lessons, notary services, travel, parking, and private-school cancellation charges can increase the total, but they are not part of the Illinois SOS permit fee.
Active-duty military status does not create a blanket discount on the original instruction-permit fee. The current SOS fee schedule lists a waiver for qualifying duplicate licenses or permits.
Payment methods:
Payment methods and card-processing charges are covered in the dedicated payment-methods guide. Check the payment options accepted by the facility you plan to visit before you go.
Bring exact cash or a debit card confirmed to work at state agencies. Card readers at some Illinois SOS locations decline credit cards or charge a processing fee. Confirm the payment method accepted at your specific facility before your appointment.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
