An Illinois Instruction Permit allows you to practice driving under strict rules. You cannot drive alone. A qualified supervisor must be in the front seat at all times.
Violating these restrictions results in fines, permit suspension, and delays in getting your license.
Your supervisor must be at least 21 years old, hold a valid Illinois drivers license for at least one year, and be seated in the front passenger seat. Probationary licenses do not count toward the one-year rule.
Download the Illinois Rules of the Road for full supervision requirements.
Driving without a supervisor is Driving Without a Valid License - a Class A Misdemeanor carrying up to $2,500 in fines and up to one year in jail.
A Naperville teen was ticketed for driving alone to school after dropping his mom at work: $250 fine, a 3-month extension of his permit period, and revoked school parking privileges.
Complete 50 hours of supervised practice driving including 10 hours of night driving between sunset and the start of curfew. Log them on Form DSD X 152.
Permit holders can drive on all public roadways including freeways - with a qualified supervisor. Everything else is restricted.
At the Naperville SOS, one parent signed the consent form correctly - but the witness line was left blank. Incomplete; witness must also sign, and the return visit had to happen within 4 days. The IL consent form requires a separate witness signature in addition to the parent signature - two signatures, not one.
Night driving must end before curfew. Log 10 of your required 50 hours between sunset and curfew start.

Supervisor occupies the front seat. Back passengers are limited to the number of working seatbelts. Drivers under 19 face a total cell phone ban including hands-free.
Moving violations reset the 9-month license eligibility clock to zero - the most expensive penalty is not the fine, it is the time lost.
| Violation | Penalty |
|---|---|
| First Cell Phone Offense | $75 fine plus court costs |
| Curfew Violation | 2-month permit suspension, fines up to $1,000 |
| Moving Violation | Resets the 9-month waiting period before license eligibility |
A Springfield teen received a speeding ticket during his permit phase - his 9-month waiting period reset to zero from the violation date, delaying his license by several months. Before your road test, check your vehicle brake lights, turn signals, and horn with your supervisor. A failed equipment check is an automatic reschedule at Illinois SOS facilities.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
