The mandatory waiting period to take your California driving test depends on your age. Minors under 18 must wait 6 months from their permit issue date. Adults 18 and older face no waiting period.
QUICK NAVIGATION
California minors must hold the instruction permit for at least six calendar months or until they turn 18, whichever comes first, before taking the driving test. Applicants who are already 18 do not have the minor six-month holding period.
| Situation | Waiting rule |
|---|---|
| Under 18 and still under 18 on test date | At least six calendar months from the permit issue date, plus the other minor eligibility requirements. |
| Turns 18 before six months are complete | The minor six-month requirement no longer continues solely because the permit was issued before age 18. |
| 18 or older when permit is issued | No minor six-month holding period. |
Yes. Use the permit issue date and count six calendar months; do not replace the rule with a fixed 180-day count. Check the exact issue date printed on the permit when planning the earliest eligible test date.
Yes. If you must reapply because the application expires, DMV gives cumulative credit for the time already held on the prior provisional permit. Keep the expired permit and bring both the expired and current permits to the driving test to show the credit.
Book the road test 8 to 10 weeks before you hit the 6-month mark. DMV offices in San Jose, Van Nuys, and Sacramento routinely have 4 to 8 week waits. Booking at month 3 ensures your appointment lands close to your eligibility date.
Schedule your driving test as soon as you are eligible. California DMV offices face high demand, requiring 2-3 month advance booking in most areas.
Booking window: The DMV allows appointments up to 90 days in advance.
Minors should book their test at the 3-month mark of their permit holding period, which allows them to secure a slot near their 6-month eligibility date. Adults should book only after they can consistently pass mock practice tests, using the typical 4-8 week appointment wait to build skills.
Check the DMV appointment portal daily between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM PT to catch last-minute cancellations. This strategy can secure a slot in under 2 weeks.
You must schedule online through the DMV website. Walk-in scheduling is not available for initial driving test appointments, and mobile DMV units do not conduct behind-the-wheel tests.
DMV publishes the 14-day retest wait specifically for minors, not including the day of failure. The adult testing section does not state the same mandatory 14-day wait, so adult applicants should follow the next available appointment and DMV instructions after a failed test. A failed behind-the-wheel test does not restart the six-month holding period, and the current noncommercial Class C behind-the-wheel retest fee is $9.
Do not apply the minor 14-day wait as a blanket rule to every adult applicant. If the application or permit expires before the applicant passes, the licensing process may require a new application.
Use the waiting period to build driving skill and keep the permit valid. Minors must complete 50 supervised practice hours, including 10 at night, plus 6 hours of professional driver training. The parent or guardian certifies the supervised hours on the instruction permit.
Keep the full practice-hour and training-document details on their dedicated pages rather than repeating them here.
Keep this page focused on timing. At a minimum, the applicant needs a valid instruction permit, and the test vehicle needs current registration and proof of insurance. Minor-specific training/practice proof and the complete test-day list are covered on the dedicated Road Test Documents page.
Do not treat every pre-drive problem as the same outcome. A qualifying mechanical safety problem can cause the test to be rescheduled, while failing four or more specified control-demonstration items can result in an unsatisfactory test. Testing before a minor is eligible can also prevent the appointment from proceeding.
You can cancel or reschedule online through the DMV portal. Provide at least 24 hours notice to avoid forfeiting your appointment slot. Last-minute cancellations without notice may require you to restart the scheduling process and wait another 2-3 months for availability.
After you pass, DMV issues the license that applies to your age and application. Keep this page focused on road-test eligibility and timing; license-stage restrictions and later steps are covered in the dedicated next-step guidance.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
