Every Class 7L driver in British Columbia's Graduated Licensing Program must have a qualified supervisor while driving.
Does a Class 7L supervisor have to be your parent or family member? No. The relationship is not the qualification test. A parent, relative, friend, or instructor can supervise if they meet the applicable age, licence, and seating rules.
The supervisor rules change on October 19, 2026, so check which rule applies on the date you drive.

The minimum supervisor age changes on October 19, 2026. Until October 18, the normal minimum remains 25, with the licensed driving-instructor exception.
Can a licensed driving instructor under 25 supervise a Class 7L learner? Yes. Under the current regulation, a licensed driver training instructor engaged in practical driver training is exempt from the ordinary 25+ age requirement.

Separate the legal qualification rules from good supervision practice.
Can the Class 7L supervisor sit in the back seat? In an ordinary car, no. The supervisor must sit beside the learner. The regulation has a narrow exception for a vehicle with no seat beside the operator, where the required position is immediately behind and to the right.
The learner should stop driving as soon as it is safe to do so and should not resume until a qualified supervisor is present. Do not continue the trip alone simply because it began with a qualified supervisor.
